Welcome to West Coast Ferrets
West Coast Ferrets is a 501(c)(3) non profit rescue organization based in Sacramento but serves all of California. Our mission is to be an educational and rescue organization of the Domestic Ferret (Mustela Putorius Furo). We take in owner surrenders, strays, and ferrets that have been abandoned or confiscated. Ferrets released to us are provided a safe environment, receive proper nutrition, and medical care. All rescue activities are authorized and conducted under the direction of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
What to do if you have found a ferret
Ferrets are domestic and cannot survive very long outside in the elements. Ferrets left outdoors are at risk of getting injured from traffic and other animals. They are sensitive to temperatures over 75 degrees so it is important to provide a safe, cool place for them.
Secure the ferret in a cat carrier or well ventilated box. Most ferrets do not bite, but they might if they are scared or injured. Gloves or a towel may be used if needed. Please provide a blanket, towel or t-shirt for them to hide and sleep in. Ferrets like to potty in corners, so putting newspaper or a potty pad in the corner will help with clean up.
Please provide the ferret with water in a heavy bowl so they don’t spill it. Cat food (dry or wet) can be provided if available but don’t be surprised if they don’t eat it. Ferrets imprint on food as a young kit and it is often difficult to get them to eat anything different.
